Noises that mean trouble
- Rumbling or grinding: worn motor bearings. This usually gets worse over a few weeks, then the fan seizes.
- Screeching or squealing: a slipping or worn belt on belt-driven fans, or dry bearings.
- Rattling or vibration: grease build-up unbalancing the impeller, or loose mountings.
- Humming but slow: a failing capacitor or speed controller.
Why it’s worth acting now
A noisy fan is still running, which means you can choose when it’s replaced: before service, on a quiet day or after you close. Wait until it stops and it will usually be at the busiest time, with the gas off and a full book of covers.
Call 0333 090 2002 and tell us what it sounds like. A short video of the noise sent by text helps us work out the fault before we arrive.
Other signs
- Smoke or heat hanging in the kitchen when it didn’t before
- A burning smell near the fan
- The fan tripping the electrics
- The interlock cutting the gas now and then
